Hello, new to the Forum but not the Trail 70

I picked up a '82 trail 70 last weekend off craigslist not running for a couple hundred. I spent all weekend maintaining to get it to run. I rode an 74 trail 70 from when I was 5 till about 16 sold it for $200 it was horrible mis-treated. So I got another one because I have been missing having one for a while and I mostly want my fiancée to ride it. I weigh in at about 200lbs she’s 110lbs I’m going to ride it but i mostly want to build it for her.

-1st it wouldn't start or run very good at all so I went to the points cleaned with sand paper and gaped to .012 started easier

-Then it wouldn't stay running like it was running out of gas it would die when it warmed up then wouldn't start. So I went through the carb. The carb insulator was leaking in a ton of air into the intake. Also the needle valve in the bowl had the rubber tip chipped off. And the spark plug gab was huge gaped it to .024

-Still not much power so I did the valves the tappets were soo tight I doubt the valves were closing. Gaped to .5mm each (a little knock need re done with the right feeler gauge)

-Now it runs good and pulls strong! oh did i mention the it didn't come with brakes? lol I fabbed up a old pedal that didn’t' fit to work and an old cable for the front. Now it has some brakes.

    So I have some questions

Is there someone on here that is setting up a titling company? I’m in Washington State and they want me to do a State Patrol VIN inspection since i don’t have the title and there’s no record of the vin here. I have a bill of sale that’s it.

What benefits does the upside down forks give you? And how much stopping power do the smaller front disk brakes have? Basically is this worth the cash? http://mytrailbuddystore.com/cncupsidedownforkanddiscbrakeaccembly.aspx

or should i rebuild the fronts with heavier oil and new seals and the smaller disk brakes?

Which engine would be the lesser of two evils? The zongston 155 or gpx 160cc?

I think that’s it for now I will try to get some pictures up tonight. but Its nothing really worth looking at hahah

    -Jay

    Hello Jay_blu

    Great pics.
I'm not familiar with the aftermarket engines or forks but I'm sure you will start seeing some replies to your questions soon.

kmcrab has a title company. PM her and see what she says about getting you a title for your CT.
    Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the help, I took the trail bike out last night for about 2 hrs on the dirt track. I got dusted by some 250's and a little kid, 5 year old, on a littel kawasaki I dont know what size it was but that bike was fast and the kid was fearless. It was a good eavning to say the least, im almost to the point of leave the bike where its at and keep ridding in the dirt. Well it needs shocks either way there all blown i feel like i got beat with a 2x4 for a few hours.

So here is what I could find on the inverted fork kit

inverted forks mean there is less unsprung weight. Less unsprung weight means the wheel will track the ground more closely over rough areas and is less likely to bounce around. They are more expensive to make though.
    Benefits of traditional forks:
    - Fewer components, given that wheel attachment and axle lug derive directly out of lower stanchion, which keeps weight down.
    - Some models actually have reduced unsprung mass.
    - Tubes slide in upper area which is more protected from dirt.

    Benefits of inverted forks:
    - Higher torsional stiffness for same weight, since the outer tube is positioned higher coincident to where the bending moment is higher.
    - Sturdy attachment between triple clamps and tubes, given large tubes.

It would seam that in the case of the trail bike that its benifits wouldn't be that noticeable? what do you guys think?

I tore into the front end getting ready for the inverted fork kit and i got to thinking this kit is going to look soo nice.... I might as well paint it now so I keept taking it apart till i couldn't any more.

I stated tacking up holes and welding seams... I know racerx is gonna tell me I "opening a can of worms with a paint shaker" by welding the seam on the frame neck but I wanted it smooth... so it will be

I believe there was some controversy over the GPX 140 and kicker issues; There was so much advance in the flywheel that the kickback was terrible, eventually splitting the rhs case. Whether or not this is resolved or exists in the 160 i do not know. I had a Zongshen 125 and loved it, you won't 'want' for more power, though you could probably find a use for it...
