    My ZB50 build thread

So this was my second build and i got the stater bike by chance. A good friend of mine was moving to spain to work for a MotoGp team. He had to sell off all his projects in a hurry so i bought most of them as a favior. There was a ZB50 in parts, a NSR50 in boxes, and a CRF50 built with mostly fast50s components. Along with the 3 bikes there was a HUGE amount of aftermarket spares for his monkey that he never put to use. I pretty much sold off all of it but the ZB and a few items i wanted for myself. the funds rasied more then paid off what i had into it all.

here is what the bike looked like when i first started. It had a few cool items to start like the money R seat and the rear cowl, but it was a long way from the way i wanted it.

one of the first things i did was strip the whole bike down and powdercoat the frame. there was a small ding in the frame that had to be repaired. the inner spare was drilled so it could be tapped out, then the hole was welded up. the remaining divit was then filled and grinded smooth.

I used a chemical and some sanding to strip the frame.

the finished product came out great. a nice flat black and you couldnt see the dent anymore.

next i got a hold of some japan NSR 6 spoke rims and repaired them. they were beat to shit. pretty much the paint was scratched to hell and there were dings all over them, as well the bearings were shot. Lots of sanding and smoothing tok place. then i took them to the powdercoater.

here is how they looked when i got them back from the coater.

next it was time to replace the swingarm with a longer one to fit the rims. I used a NSR swingarm and i had to change the shock mount location as the offset was different.

So the swingarm shock mount was cut off of both of them and the ZB shock mount was rewelded on to the NSR swingarm in the correct location.

here is what it looked like with the moded NSR swingarm hooked up.

actually thats a little out of order cause the powdercoating was done after this point.

for the motor i went with a Takegawa 124+r and a daytona dry cltuch. i ran into a issue when fitting the two together. The fins from the V cylinder blocked the fittings on the clutch for the oil cooler. so i had to make some changes.

here is a picture of it mocked up to show the problem

When i was done i grinded the fins and polished them so the fittings cleared.

    I also polished the cases.

i must say im really happy with how the motor turned out, it revs up so fast.

for the exhuast i went with a yoshimura type 8 titainum and carbon full system. I have one of their other pipes on my monkey and i have been quite happy with their quality.

for a while i was running a set of monkey R rearsets with a home made bracket to convert them from drum to disk.

this picture was taking at motoGP in montery the other month. In it you can see the headlight setup. I used a automotive fog light and home mde bracket. Its fitted under a CRF150 number plate.

Hey.. that things got plates! How did you go about doing that? I thought the ZB50s were 'off road' only ... and after the takagawea engine is it still "carb" approved?

All Honda ZB50's were street legal from the factory and came with Street Legal MSO's.
