mfro's Z50 J1 twins - pics of tank, carb, intake setup

    Mfro,

I opened a new thread as you suggested. Just a recap to what I was after.

Was looking on the forum and came across your bikes. They are pretty sweet.

I had a question for you. I'm putting and 88cc kit on my 72.

I am having issues with the carb interfering with the petcock from my fuel tank. From your pictures yours doen't seem to.

What is your setup? intake, etc. Is there a spacer ?

Could you send me some close ups?

As I alreay told you, I relocated the petcock about 70 mm in front and also lifted the rear end of the tank by about 20 mm with an additional spacer below the original tank mount. Enough space to fit a Keihin PE28.

The original flange is soldered with brass lead (at least in my case). You can reuse it in the new position. Machining a cap to solder at the old flanges position should be left to somebody with access to a lathe. I've also seen people soldering a €-Cent instead

Forgot this. I also have an adjustable intake manifold which allows to fit in any angle. Needed to lead the accelerator cable exactly between tank and frame.

    mfro,

Your tank look different then mine. The lower baffle have more surface area. Did you mod that whole lower baffle or is that factory? so that you could move the petcock over 70mm.

Is that intake a custom item or can i get one from a supplier?

    Weekendz~

Different years of the 1972-1978 Z50 tanks as you've found out look the same from the top, but are different on the bottom. I can't remember the cutoff year when they changed the tanks.

Can anyone help with the cut off year or the year that Honda changed the bottom of the tank?

Better yet does anyone have a tank like Mfro's with that exact bottom that they are willing to sell or part with?

You can buy an aftermarket tank on ebay for about 125.00 since the bike is not original anyway and the tank will be new. And they have the "correct" bottom K1.

The green one is a '76 (Japanese model), the orange one a German '77. I never saw a tank like yours over here. Is that possibly another subtile difference between Z50A and Z50J1?

Honda switched the bottom design of the tanks to your style later in production. 1974-1975, I can't remember.
