Thread: Ordering from CHP

I have a number of items I want to order from CHP parts. (CHP Race products, Classic Honda USA, Honda CT70, Z50, Pit Bikes, Monkey Bike, XR50, CRF50, NSR50, XR70, CRF70, Pit Bikes, Honda Minitrails, XR100 and NOS, Kitaco, Takegawa Parts and services.)

What I did before ordering, is run down to my local Honda dealer and find out pricing on some of the same items I want to order. There were multiple parts that were twice the price of what CHP is selling them for. Some of these are critical parts, such as wheel bearings, and sprockets.

My question is, are the parts from the Honda dealer that much better, or are they just making a killing on them? Bearings, for example, at chp are about 20 bucks per set of 4. Honda dealer wanted $11.99 per bearing.

Wheel bearings are not something I would want to "cheap out" on, so before I go ordering from CHP, I thought I'd try to get some feedback on the quality of the parts from CHP. Anyone?

If you'll check CHP's site the items with the asterik are original Honda or visa versa.You can't go wrong with Honda even if they are a bit more.You're paying for quality.However sometimes you have to watch your local dealer, they sell no where near the volume of parts for these small Honda's as CHP and others here.

I have always like CHP and I have ordered from others. Your Honda dealer, like your car dealer has to make some money, he does have a brick and mortar store after all, your paying for the convenience. You could go to a bearing supply, look in the yellow pages, and they can cross reference the numbers on the side of the bearing. When I got my z new for the Christmas '69, I could not ride it until we went to Florida for Christmas break. Drove it all over Sanibel Island's beaches and then off to the Keys. Less than a year later I had to put in new bearings and used the Honda ones, they are still in it-

If you get on your dealers good side,they sometimes give you a discount, I get 10% which isn't much, but it pays the tax. Having 5 different size Hondas, I have bought a few things from him.

I've ordered from CHP several times -- never had a problem .

Very fair on shipping as well .

Only problem i have with CHP is they have to charge me tax being in the state.So what i save on shipping the goverment makes it up with the state sales tax.

Ain't it the truth ! I'm in the retail business , you would be amazed at how much sales tax is collected by small businesses . No picnic for the business that is forced to collect it .

Amen,brother ! I can relate to that !

CHP has one of the largest selections of hard to get items but, do tend to list items that are out of stock. Not being able to order online is a bit outdated. Phone or fax are your only options when ordering. It took thousands of dollars spent at CHP, NEVC, and Dr ATV to get my HKO restoration completed.

Full retail price at a dealership is about as expensive as anything gets. Still, those $12 bearings cost the dealership more than $5 each, wholesale. Online, they're probably more like $8 each. Wheel bearings are a safety item, you only need 4 per bike and, if you buy quality, fully sealed, examples they'll likely last the life of the hub. Wholesale cost of wheel bearings ranges from less then $2 to almost $20ea. I'd use sealed, mid-priced NTNs or Koyos for a stock bike. If you're building a 50mph+ road bike, an extra $40 is cheap peace of mind, even if it is overkill. Sprockets aren't strictly a safety item, but a wear item. The ultra-cheapies are going to be manufactured to loose tolerances and from soft alloys. For $40, or less, you shoulod be able to get a good quality, properly hardened c/s sprocket and
wheel sprocket made from hardened 1045 (or similar) steel.

Don't go cheap with the chain. Chain & sprockets are a system. Any one of the three pieces can kill the rest if worn out. Unless youre doing a concours-restoration, sourcing a heavy-duty chain will pay for itself over the long haul. This is one of the few examples where the OEM-spec item wasn't so good.
