    Question Tranny Thrust Washers... Again!

This is a question that's been asked before, but the answers didn't seem right to me. I'm restoring a CT70HK0. I was careful when I pulled apart the 4 spd box to make sure I didn't lose anything. When I pulled out the main shaft there was no thrust washer between the shaft and the left side case bronze bushing. There was a 13.5mm washer on the countershaft where it sets into the right side case. Time to look at the manual.

Well, the Clymer manual shows a 14mm thrust washer on the main shaft (see pic). However, the Honda parts fiche doesn't show any thrust washer. So much for reading the manual.

Previous posts have said sometimes the thrust washer is there and sometimes it isn't - from the factory. That doesn't sound like Honda to me. In the parts fiche the main shaft thrust washer is shown for 3 spd trannys, but not the 4 spds. Butting a shaft up against a bronze bushing without a thrust plate doesn't seem like a good practice to me - it seems like a place where a thrust washer belongs.

Has anyone rebuilt a few of these 4 spds and could shed some light on this quandry.

    Cheers,
    TY
