First dumb question only because I`ve done it a few times...is the key 'On'?
Well, from my experience it could be bad gas and I don`t mean from eating to much broccoli! Fuel does start to go bad after about 30 days. I find that in these old engines, they don`t want to fire on stale fuel. If those jets were clogged, maybe the fuel is bad.
Other than that, hows the plug?

I had a hard time starting mine when I got it. I rebuilt the carb, and put new points and condensor on. Still no start. The new points were bad so I put the old ones on and a new spark plug and it started right away. Did you check the gap on the points? How about the spark plug gap? You say you`re getting "fir"? Do you mean spark from the spark plug? The plug may spark, but the gap on the plug might still be wrong. Also, you can take the sparkplug out and see if it has lots of gas on it. If it does, you can dry it before you put it back in. Then try to start it again.
