91 CT 70 Chain too long

    1991 Honda CT 70
I am at the end of the chain adjusters. The chain appears to have stretched, is that possible? I replaced the rear sprocket gear as it was worn, that did not really help much. Can I shorten the chain a link or two? Is that possible? Any help? Thanks.

Find where the master link is on your chain, buy yourself a chain tool, and take 2 links out of the chain. It's also a good idea to buy a new chain when you install new sprockets.

    Chains are cheap!

I agree, get a new chain or just cut some links off of the old one.

    Fixed it right

I took your advice and replaced both sprockets and a new chain. Made sure the new sprockets were properly aligned as that wore out the old rear sprocket. With new pieces things are back within adjustment range but will likely take out a link after things have worn in a little. Thanks.

I met an older fella who had a S-90 with 68,000 miles on it! As I chatted with him about it, he told me the chain was original. I told him that if the chain broke, he likely wouldn't coast gently to a stop, but rather the chain would bunch up around the CSS and knock a hole in the case back there. I think he became more interested in chain life.

I haven't done this in years.. but I usta stretch my chain out on the driveway, measure it, then push all the links together as far as they wanna go, then measure again and determine the % wear from that. Problem is, I have forgotten at what % you need to start worrying!
