Chinese clone parts on '78 CT70?

With my little project, i've got several non-motor mechanical sub-assemblies that require replacement - I wouldn't consider using these chinese knock-off parts for motor parts due to their poor metallurgical reputation, but i am curious about the other parts that may or may not be substitutable.

Namely, the seat/seat pan and the folding handlebar assemblies, as i saw were available through Ebay from an outfit called 'Green Dragon Imports' .. http://stores.ebay.ca/Green-Dragon-Imports - Obviously these are meant for the Chinese knock-offs, but he is advertising them as 'CT-70 compatable'. I am not concerned with originality, but am concerned with compatability and durability, and most of all economy - and his prices for these seem to be more than reasonable, especially if i can order these and have them shipped as one lot to avoid excessive UPS brokerage fees.

Does anyone have any experience with retrofitting these components good or bad?

    Thanks,

The chinese handlebars are considerably shorter than original Honda bars. By that I mean the vertical run is about 2-3 inches shorter, so if you are a taller rider you may feel like your hands are hitting your knees when you turn. Of course, all the original wiring, throttle cable and brake lines are accordingly 2-3 inches too long, so it isn't as clean an application and you may need to modify some cables. But then again orginal handlebars in unbent condition are extremely hard to find, so it may be a tradeoff you are willing to make.

Seat is good quality, pan is identical to the Honda except no "catch" for the latch.
I plan on removing the cover and welding the catch from my old pan.

Not Honda quality but plenty dagum good!

    Seat latch

Check out the fix for the latch with no welding simple and works great!

I'm 6'0" even, so the handlebar rise is a moderate concern. I have already found that the handlebars are somewhat too close together in terms of overall width, so this might exacerbate the ergonomic issue more.

But you are right, unbent handlebars are basically inobtainium on the used parts market in these parts - i haven't even bothered to check at the Stealership for parts availability or pricing yet .. reasonably priced CT70's whether intact or baskets are rare enough, and if found, chances are they are going to have bent and/or twisted handlebars also.

The bars on mine have been bent/twisted and cracked .. so they are basically junk, so i may not have the choice but to order Chinese clone.

Thanks for that info, thats the sort of advice i need.

While the CT70 folding bars are unavailable NOS in the US, they are available from CMSNL. I bought a set last year for the project bike, and they are beautiful.

    Cheers!
