Question clutch question from a newbie

As I look at the parts list and assembly picture in a Clymer manual, it looks like the disc A closest to the outer housing and disc b are friction material to friction material and then the outer disc a is steel to friction material on disc b. I just assembled my clutch this way with hd springs it works but not quite right it shifts really hard like bam its in gear it does seem to release . I can sit with it in gear at an idle and it will not move do i have it backwards or could it be the springs or both please help this is all very new to me

The clutch is assembled with steel discs between the friction discs. If you've assembled it with two friction discs contacting each other directly, then it's incorrectly assembled. The discs never go in friction material-to-friction-material

I wouldn't run the bike until the assembly is checked & corrected. The friction discs may already be ruined. If you see a lot of particles/contamination in the oil, that's a bad sign. Plan on cleaning out the debris and replacing the friction discs.

From your description it sounds like you have a 3-speed, semi-auto. Adjustment is a bit touchy with these and and incorrectly adjusted clutch will result in rough gear changes. Get the discs sorted out first, that's more likely to be the cause.
