    electrical help. lights, battery?

Im having problems with the lights on my bike. They are very dim unless the engine is revved up. They dont work at all when the engine is not running when the key is on. Blinkers turn on, but dont blink unless the engine is revved high, so they dont blink when im stopped at a stop light. The loudness of the horn also depends on the rpm of the engine.

I hooked up a voltage meter to the battery and got about 4.5 volts with the engine off. When i turn the key to on, it drops a lot. When i start the engine, it goes back up to around 4-5. When i rev the engine, it goes over 6v.

Is my battery bad? Do I have a short?

I replaced the rectifier and it didnt help.

Im thinking of getting one of those sealed batteries. Like this one Geneis NP4-6 F1 Battery - Sealed Lead Acid

I had a similar problem and replacing the battery cured it. You can buy a replacement battery for less than $20.00. Ensure you follow the filling and charging instructions for the new battery before it's first use.

Merz, $12.59 for that gel-cell is a good price. I just bought one at my wholesale fire alarm distributor for about the same price. And the Genesis brand battery that you're looking at is a better quality than the one I purchased... Anyway, I cut the wires off the old battery and soldered them onto the new gel-cell then covered the terminals with a double layer of heat shrink tubing. Fits nicely in the original battery box, works great, and no acid mess to deal with.

Ok im going to order one.

Here is the same battery for $5.10
    EnerSys Genesis NP4-6 (0.187) [EnerSys Genesis NP4-6 (0.187)] - $5.10 : Portable Power Systems, Got Batteries?
shipping is a bit more though, so it ends up being just a little cheaper than the other one.

Hopefully this will solve my lighting problems. I dont like having to make sure im home by dark every night.

Good Luck! I'm certain this is just what your Trail 70 needed.
