This probably sounds like a stupid question, but what is the intake manifold to carb insulator made of? Is it rubber or hard plastic? I'm asking because the one on my CT70K0 is hard plastic and I'm not sure if this is due to age or design. thanks

It's designed to disapate the heat transfer from the engine/intake manifold to the carb. As mentioned above it's made of hard plastic.

i guess a homemade one of rubber would accomplish the same thing in an emergency, does it make a difference if its located on the head or carb side of the intake
