key doesn't kill spark, kill switch does '77 ct70

I just got done soldering probably 18 wires on the harness of my '77 ct 70. Sombody (possibly a mouse) had cut through all of the wires that run up to the key switch, sorta under the gas tank. In that harness there are two black wires, since these were cut when I got it I didn't know which black one went to where. one black was next to the neutral wire on each side of the cut harness so I figured they'd go together. Had they key on and kill switch unplugged and had spark which was cool, but tried key off and it still sparked. Plugged in the kill switch and the kill switch would stop spark, but key wouldn't. I don't have a battery in it at this time so to get spark I was jumpering the two black wires at the battery plugin. Do I need a battery for key to kill the spark, or do I have a bad ignition?
Are wiring diagrams available online anywhere? Thanks.
