Case split will need to be done to remove the kickstart shaft. You will also need a clutch nut socket too. I would get yourself a Clymers manual for the project, very helpful info in this book. I must of looked at mine about a 1,000 times redoing my HKO last winter!

Besides the clutch nut removal tool, you will also need a flywheel puller and a good hand held impact driver with the proper phillips head driver. You should also get yourself a gasket set to replace all the old gaskets once you tear the engine down. I would also import a good portion of patience. This is quite a job if you have never done it before. Make sure you have a good shop manual and look at it often.

If replacing it seems too much work for you, there are two ways you could get by without replacing it. the first is welding the lever to the shaft (not recomended). or you can drill a hole through the lever and shaft and run a bolt through both, this is what i did as a temporary fix until I go to rebuild my motor, but this can be a permanant fix.
