My biggest weakness is electrical. Help me with testing.

Most people wouldn't mess with the junk I do but I will pick up anything that's not locked up. As long as the bike has fire I keep everything I might need to get a bike going without ordering anything.

However when I start messing with electrical I lose my momentum.

Is there any type of equipment I can use to see if a stator or coil is doing it's job?

When I have a CT70 or Z50 that's not getting any fire the first thing I do is bypass the harness and run the hot wire from the stator directly to the coil.

If I do not get any fire I hook the hot wire from the stator to a known good coil.

If I still do not have any fire I replace the points and condensor.

Still no fire I replace the coils on the stator plate.

I've spent days tracking electrical faults and I was wondering if anyone had some tips to speeding up the process.

(I might mention that before I start I check to make sure the points are opening at the correct time and clean them up a bit.)

Do you have a meter? If not, get one that checks volts & ohms. I would also get a 6v/12v test light...That makes it very easy to check continuity and to run down any shorts or breaks in the wiring. The one I have checks 6v thru 48v systems. Purchase a Clymer Manual. The Honda Shop Manual can be downloaded here in the resource section.
