    Oil pump question

    Ill try to make this short and sweet...

    I'm rebuilding my engine and have ran into a bit of a snag.

    My oil pump sprocket which rides on the cam chain was pretty well chewed up by a loose chain. I ordered a new sprocket, put it on but it seems to me that the shaft end that mates of with the flat section of the oil pump is BARELY mated. I have dry fitted cylinder and head to see if the pump would turn in normal operation but its not even engaging the pump, as I expected. I put old sprocket back on just for giggles and same thing. Its almost like I need a longer shaft but I know that cant be the case.

    I'm pretty sure that in this state the shaft would pull out of the pump and leave me with out oil circulation thus frying my bikr. I would like to feel a little more comfortable knowing that the mating parts were locked together with more than a 1/16''... if you know what I mean.


    Any ideas?

    I would check the engine serial # and makes sure your using the right parts for the right year motor. Check the part numbers too.

    Is your pump a heavy duty aftermarket pump? If so, there are two different HD oil pumps for the CT: one is for the pre-1982 bikes, and the other is for CTs made after 1982. You NEED to get the correct pump. I found out the hard way. Seized the thing up and cooked the cylinder and piston (the head, mercifully, was okay). Go to TB (Trail Bikes) website, and they have both pumps for sale, as well as a nice, illustrated step-by-step on how to install it.

    I have not checked part numbers as everything is stock and worked before I tore it down.Of course, i never seen the oil pump work but I put 200 miles on it so.. you know

    Negative, its stock oil pump. original pump, I just replaced drive sprocket. the timing chain ate the old on up pretty bad. I will see if TB will have any tips for installations.

    Another question.. Are there any Clips on shaft to keep it in place? I never removed any but you never know what last owner did to engine.

    WEll, once again this little bike has made assclown outa me.

    Seems the stator plate keeps the oil sprocket RIGHT WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE.

    Its working great!
