    Quick Coil Question

I finally dropped the motor to remove my wiring harnass.

I HATE MICE, by the way.

Anyway, I soldered all the broken connections and removed the coil. Upon inspection of the coil, one of the nutts was missing and some battery acid had rusted the base mounts on the coil. I'm going to clean it up to get to bare metal before remounting.

My bike has always lacked power and speed.
Here's my question, could the rusted coil mounts cause the bike to be sluggish? I'm thinking the coil could have been improperly grounded and looking for some place else to go rather than its requisite destination, the plug.

    To be sure...

If you are concerned about the coil ground, you can easily run a supplemental ground strap. I ran a 12" braided copper automotive ground cable (eyelets at both ends) from one of the coil mounting studs up to the mounting bolt for the helmet holder. It's all hidden inside the frame - neat and clean.

    No more worries about grounds....

You can get a good aftermarket coil at Northeast Vintage Cycle OEM NOS and Reproduction Honda Parts Z50 CT70 Minitrail for about 20 bucks. I would go that route and have piece of mind that all is new.

I threw everything back together yesterday and did a serious clean-up job on the corrosion. I was pleasantly surprised when my lack luster 25-28mph bike got up to 32 sustained speed on the flat and popped out at 35 on a very slight decline.

The scientific method says to only manipulate one variable so you can define whether or not that ONE variable influenced the outcome. Now i'm not certain if the grounded coil is the culprit of my new found power or is it the fact that I didnt replace the air cleaner while testing and allowing it to breathe easier.

I am very optimistic though, luck, through this entire project, has been on my side.
