    Removing VIN plate

I am ready to remove the VIN plate on the frame/steering column. I was wondering if I could grind off the rivet heads using my Dremel tool? Can I salvage the plate that way?

Grinding off the rivet heads isn't the best solution. You'll still need to remove what's left in the frame and managing to avoid roughing up the VIN tag isn't easy. Plus, you'll still have to contend with the generous application of 35 year old adhesive still holding the tag in place. Best bet is to use a small triangular file to file two perpendicular grooves into the rivet heads, then very carefully drill them out with a .0625" drill bit, then a .125" bit. That should remove the heads after which a bit of gentle heat can be used to soften the adhesive. Usually, the rivets will pop out during the drilling, provided you've kept the drill centered.

I pretty much did what racerx suggested plus I was able to use 4 lb test fishline and slid it on the back side. That allowed the plate to keep its shape for the most part and I was able to remount.
