Question Trail 70 auto clutch question

I did an amature restoration on a 70 CT 70. Rattle can paint, all new electrical and a mess of internet parts later and it came out pretty good and runs great -has about 1400 miles and the speedometer still works, so probably correct? The only problem that we have is that it is sometimes difficult to downshift, especially into neutral -it is the 3speed "auto" transmission. Is there something to adjust, is there something that has to be replaced or is just they way that ther are? Thanks, Glen

A classic example of why a repair manual is a CT rider's friend. Sounds like you need to adjust the clutch release preload. Even the semi-auto clutch must be disengaged mechanically to shift gears; this happens everytime the shifter is depressed/raised. Hold the shifter down after kicking into first gear and you'll find that the clutch is working just like a manual.

Loosen the nut on the RH engine cover and turn the adjusting screw inward until you just feel resistance. Then back off the adjustment about 1/8 turn and test the bike. You don't want all of the slack removed, as it's murder on the throwout bearing & clutch. However, some trannies shift better with the adjustment a tiny fraction of a turn more or less than the guideline. Getting it optimized is an easy 5 minute job requiring nothing more than a wrench, screwdriver and a few test runs.

In addition to racerx's fine suggestion, make sure your chain is properly adjusted 1st.
