VIN Number Problems, how can I register...

I've been lurking for awhile but this is my first post. I've had what I believe to be a K0 ever since I was young. My father bought it new and a few years later I came along...wasn't long before I was riding it all the time. Anyway, I'm in the later stages of my rebuild (following some really good examples I've seen here) and I'm wanting to register the motorcycle and make it street legal. Here's the problem, I don't have any kind of VIN number for it. The plate that's riveted on to the steering head is long gone, and there's no old documentation that I've ever even heard of. The number on the engine is CT70E-217*** but I don't know how to precisely correlate that to a VIN number. So I guess I'm trying to figure out what my options are as far as eventually being able to put plates on the thing.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find the info I need from searching so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!

    Jesse

There is another place to find the frame VIN. Check on the left side near the chain guard forward mount bolt. If you give me the first few digits of the vin, I should be able to tell you the month/year it was built. With that info you will be able to buy a replacement VIN tag, have it stamped, and attach it to the steering collar.

Thanks for the response. Wow, that makes it easy! I didn't realize it was stamped there as well. I'll check there and report back...

While I'm at it, can you recommend a place that will make the new VIN plate for the steering head??

    Thanks for the help!

Email: jrure@aol.com he makes aluminum plates and applies your serial number on it for about 25.00

    They are awesome.

There is another seller that sells an actual metal tag that you have stamped like the original....Read the descriptions because some sellers offer a decal that is printed and not stamped.

Karen is right. Stick with a metal tag. You can take it to a local engraver to have it stamped with your KO's specific information.
