    Kick Stand Weld or?

K Stand 001.jpgThe problem with the Ct70 kickstands are pretty much common knowledge. In this picture I've added about 4" inches of wood just to get me an idea of how much needs to be added. (got a beefy front end and longer rear shocks) Also there's a bend in the stand that needs straightening out. I'm not interested in those center stands so I figure I'll go to a weld shop and have em add the 4inches. What I need is like a strong longer alloy kickstand. Anyone who's solved their stand issue...I'd like to hear it. plus do I get it migged or tigged cause I know that acetylene welds arent strong enough for this purpose?K Stand 001.jpg

This thread is right up Grant's alley. He's the "subject matter expet" for sure.

    Adam,

As you work getting this right, check the bolt holding the kickstand. Often, they are worn which accounts for some of the excess angle of the kickstand relative to the ground. Also would recommend that you try to keep the kickstand as upright to the ground as possible. This will keep the weight of the bike going down the long axis of the kickstand. If it is long and angled out to the side, the weight of the bike will tend to want to bend the kickstand. The shaft isn't that large of a diameter and can't support a lot of bending load. The bending load is also what causes the bolt to wear. Just some thoughts.

You want the guy to tig weld it, if he says he can do a proper job on something that small a diameter with mig, find someone else.

I say leave it as is. That wood mod looks good to me.

I wish I could just 'weld on' an extra 4 inches.....

I just re-read your post and thought you were talking about an aluminum sidestand. Mig on the stock steel sidestand would be fine.

    Sorry for the mis information.

    Ok Thanks!

I know nothing about welding and am thinking about No.1Banana's suggestion and just keeping it wooden

When I got my '79, it had a broken off kickstand. I welded a steel spike (giant nail) to the remaining piece, welded a cut-off nail for a spring holder, bought a spring at Autozone and it worked perfect. I got my new kickstand from Beatrice last Friday and it's a bit short. My kickstand is on top of a brick right now. I'm thinking of cutting splicing a piece into the new kickstand to lengthen it. I just a have a cheap Harbor Freight wire feed welder, but it gets the job done.
I am not good at welding, but I've gotten really good at grinding!!!

Interesting targetdrone, I went to harbor freight and saw one for $179 by Chicago electric and says if you add gas it will be a full mig welder. For that price it might be something to consider especially when you think about farming out the work at like $30 minimum. Is that the one you have?
