    Newbie old guy with questions

    I've got a 1972 CT70 HK1. I'm considering a 88cc kit, and have some questions.

I have read all 27 pages of the mods thread and it appears that the kits from TB get the highest reccomendations.

My plan is to get the 88cc kit with head and carb from TB, along with the high volume oil pump.

    Questions:
    1) I want to add beefed up clutch springs- Where do I get them?

    2) My fuel on/off valve is on the stock carb. Should I get the new one from TB and where do I mount it?

    3) Will I be able to use my stock throttle and cable?

    4) Will I be able to retain the stock skid plate and support rods?

    5) I would like to mantain the stock appearance as much as possible; I want to keep my stock exhaust and would like some specific instructions to open it up enough to make use of the extra power from the TB kit. Will someone help me out?

    Tune me up please, Thanks!

If you're going this far, then I'd recommend sourcing the billet HD clutch from TB while you're ordering parts. It comes with HD springs and is cheap insurance against clutch basket failure if you ever rev the motor past 11K. The stock internal twist grip throttle has just enough travel to work with carbs up to 22mm. You may need to modify your throttle cable. Best location for an external petcock is on the frame, using the threaded hole that used to attach your OE airbox; there's also an offset manifold & open element air filter in your future, if you want everything to fit and the engine to breathe.

The engine guard and exhaust should fit no differently than with the stock top end on the motor.

Thanks for the post. I sure hope that someone chimes in with advice about how to modify the stock exhaust.

I would like to suggest that if your going to drop the coin on the engine mods, that you don't skimp on a pipe. remember that a engine is just a air pump. the air comes in and out. so your going to bring more air in with the carb and intake. larger bore is going to need the air and then... your going to try and get rid of it through a drinking straw.
I have done a exhaust that your speaking of. I cut along the factory welds and then made two cross cuts. "scooped" out all the guts and tig welded it back together. so first off. unless you can weld, you'll have to pay for a welder to button it up.( you can't use uncle buck here.) and then your still stuck with such a small primary header pipe that your still restricting it. just thought I would save you time and money.

I pretty much decided to go with the Trail Buddy Thumper exhaust. It seems to fit my plan for a stock appearance, buddy pegs, and heat shield.

I haven't heard a lot of folks raving about performance gains; but I'll find out.
